BookMyne App Problem

Update from the App publisher:

There was a corruption in the library listings.

User have two choices if BookMyne is not working for them:
1. They can delete the app and reinstall it. This should fix the problem immediately.
2. They can wait until the new app is available in the iTunes store. The app has a fix that will clean up the corrupt data.

Apple Apps for Easy Mobile Searching

Searching the library catalog and selecting library databases from your smart phone is made easier with two new apps available from Apple. Download the free apps on your I-phone, I-pod touch or I-pad and connect with the library in a whole new way.

BookMyneIn addition to providing easy mobile access to the library’s catalog BookMyne offers these additional features: Barcode scanning capability—library users can scan the barcode of a book at a bookstore and check to see if the item is available at the library. Enhanced account interaction—library users can view account information including fines and fees and check due dates for checked out items. Users can also renew checked out items as well as place and manage holds.

AccessMyLibrary (Available for Apple and Android devices) AccessMyLibrary allows users to easily search for information in many of our Gale resources. AccessMyLibrary uses GPS to find public libraries within a 10-mile radius of the user's location. There’s no need to log in; simply select Grace A Dow Memorial Library as your home library and begin searching.

Nonfiction Titles For e-Readers

In the past year, many of you have inquired about downloadable e-books for various e-readers. While access to popular, best selling e-book titles is not available through NetLibrary, the good news is that the Library now offers thousands of non-fiction e-book titles compatible with The Sony Digital Readerer, Barnes and Noble’s Nook and other popular e-book readers. Currently, these e-books are not compatible with all e-readers such as Amazon’s Kindle.

POPULAR “TEEN SPOT” RECEIVES FURNITURE GIFT
Thanks to the generous donation from the Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Theta Tau Chapter in Midland, worn furniture in the Teen Spot was replaced with a new, colorful bench seat. The bright color and the circle design compliment the Alden B. Dow inspired décor. The Teen Spot continues to be a gathering place for teens to study, meet friends and access computers. We appreciate this gift which keeps the area looking fresh and inviting.

Park and Read

The Grace A. Dow Memorial Library, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Library of Michigan are again hosting Park and Read.

Library card holders can pick up a free one day Park and Read pass during their next stop at the Check Out Desk. Each pass provides access to any one of Michigan’s state parks or recreation areas. Most parks feature hammocks that can be borrowed for relaxing with a good book.

The program runs through October 1. Passes are valid for seven days from check-out and can be redeemed for one resident daily motor vehicle permit. The Library has a limited number of passes available on a first-come basis.

State and Federal forms are available on the web. Download, print and file from the convenience of your home or from our tax-corner PC. We still have many paper forms and instructions in the tax corner as well.

As the end of the year approaches and you are considering a charitable donation for tax purposes, remember that your donation to the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library is eligible for a
Michigan tax credit.

Donations to the library can be designated in memory or in honor of someone. You can select to donate for library materials, programs or services in general. Selections will reflect any specific areas that you have identified. Materials purchased from donations include a book plate
with the name of the donor and the persons being memorialized or honored. The donation form and more information about tax advantages are available here.

If you wish to donate to the library’s endowment fund, please contact the Midland Area Community Foundation at 839-9661.

Your gift is appreciated and will help us to continue providing quality materials and programs for our community.

New Videos "First-Come, First-Served"

Beginning Monday, January 4, 2010, new videos will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Holds will no longer be allowed on videos until they are reassigned to the regular video collection. The length of time that videos are in the hold process has resulted in limited vailability for our users. Under the “no holds” change, new videos will have a quicker turnover, increasing the number of check outs during the 6-month period that they are on the new shelf. Everyone will have a better opportunity to enjoy the new videos. New videos check out for 4 days at $2.50 each. After 6 months, videos are $1.25 each for 7 days. Revenue collected from video check out contributes to the operation of the library.

Your Future: Getting Into College and Michigan Colleges

Two new webpages are up: Planning Your Future and Michigan Colleges & Universities.

Planning Your Future includes links to web sites on testing (ACT, SAT, etc.), choosing a career, how to choose a college, financial aid and scholarship information and personal finance. The sites are primarily for the college bound, but can be helpful to anyone.

Michigan Colleges & Universities contains links to all 4-year and 2-year colleges and universities in Michigan. Please let us know if we have missed a school.

Color Printing Now Available

High quality color printing is available from all public Internet machines. Color printing is both easy and, at $1 per page, very economical. Instructions for using the automated print system are posted near every computer. Be sure to ask about color printing at the Reference and Youth Services Desks.

Laptop Rental at the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library

Check out a Laptop for use use within the Library.

Laptops allow the user to access the Internet through the Library's wireless network in most parts of the building. The laptop's operating system is Windows XP and they are also equipped with Microsoft Office products 2007. The laptops allow the user to upload to the Internet or download to a disk or flash drive. Please note that any programs or documents saved to the laptop will be erased after each individual use so the user is encouraged to use external storage for saving work.

The first hour of use is free of charge. Each additional hour or partial hour may be rented for a charge of $2.50 per hour or partial hour.

Just browse for a title and click on the Listen Online button. Each selection is streamed in high quality, unabridged format.

TumbleTalkingBooks offers Read-Alongs which include the accompanying e-book in large print, easy-to-read format.

Historic Midland Newspapers Available Online

Historic Midland newspapers that were preserved on microfilm are now available in digital form through the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library.

Midland newspapers have been preserved on microfilm for years. ProQuest, a private company based in Ann Arbor and the owner of the master microfilm copies, was hired to digitize the microfilms for Midland newspapers from their inception in 1870 through 1922 and make them available online. The Friends of the Library funded the project.

The online images may be searched by words or viewed by date. You may print or e-mail the page images. Many of these newspapers were old when first microfilmed; hence, the end product reflects the condition of the newspaper when it was originally filmed.

You may access this new resource from computers in the library or from any computer that’s connected to the Internet. You will need a library card to remotely access the resource.
